Monica is…ready for San Francisco.

I am so excited to get out of LA for a bit. I haven’t been able to travel as much as I’d like, but I really hope that changes. Every once in while, its nice to get out of your comfortable surroundings & explore a new place or revisit a favorite haunt. I’m heading to San Francisico this weekend & for me trips always represent an opportunity to try some new food. We are staying near Union Square & I’m already craving my favorite breakfast from a cheesy fake 50’s diner, Lori’s Diner. Filled with random crap on the wall, served with a side of nostalgia & delicious American food.

Monica is…inspired.

Everytime I think about Lucas Zarebinski, he blows my mind. He is an amazing & talented photographer that takes a subject like food, accessories or drinks & makes them a work of art. The contrast in color & light makes just a regular ass sandwich pure debauchery. His work has been featured in LA Magazine, Men’s Health & countless others. When I muster up some cash for a new camera, he’ll be my inspiration. Check out the rest of his work on his personal page. FYI the B.L.T. is my favorite.

Monica is…trying to eat recession friendly.

grilled chicken

When you live around here, markets have the shittiest variety of veggies & poor meat. I have a Food4Less across the street & I never go there. (Food4Less is a market in LA that sucks ass, medicine, baby formula, & liquor are in cages) It’s pretty horrible & if your in there chances are the person paying right in front has a 400z beer, reeks of cigarettes & talking to themselves. I hate dealing with this shit, so I often drive pretty far to find yummy things to make for dinner. Sadly there is no fresh farmers market here. Although sometimes, I don’t have the energy to sit in traffic & I find myself snagging goods in the most unlikely places. Tonight’s dinner was pretty much supplied from the 99cent store & a small yet efficient min-market by my house. Yep, those pretty asparagus & fresh zucchini, a deal at just a buck each.  Grilled chicken, soft jasmine rice, oven roasted veggies topped with parmesan cheese. So you see kids, there’s lots of cheap, healthy things to eat around here, if you look hard enough.

Monica is…still thinking about Mimi’s Cafe.

menu

After being duped earlier (“mega sale” at the LA Convention center), we decided to eat away our disappointment with a comforting visit to Mimi’s Cafe in Atwater Village. It’s a little cottage, filled with awful french/jazz decor & screaming families. Yet they have a pretty decent spread for a money conscious pocket, like myself. They give you that little basket of joy filled with carrot raisin bread. I could eat mounds of that bread slathered in softened butter! I had the ranchero eggs over country potatoes & filled my tummy with starchy goodness. It was just right for 7 bucks & I was seemingly happy again. I love a deal, but geez I can’t wait to eat like I used to. These chain restaurants are pretty far from fine dinning. Soon I hope…soon.
